Sarvi vs. Kline: The Good Fight We’ve Been Waiting For

Despite our disastrous loss in 2006, I thought the 2nd Congressional District seat could be won by a strong Democrat and wrote as much just a month after the election.

After all, I reasoned, Amy Klobuchar carried the district. We had a series of big wins in legislative races throughout Dakota County. Hell, John Kerry even won Eagan two years earlier. There’s absolutely no reason at all for John Kline to be our congressman for life. We can do better.

At the time I didn’t have a candidate for 2008 in mind, but that soon changed when I learned about Steve Sarvi, an Iraq War veteran who’s also serving his community here in Minnesota as a local government official.

I’ve been fortunate enough to exchange numerous e-mails with Steve over the past 18 months. We’ve talked politics, policy and history—surprisingly, he’s the only person I’ve met who was interested in my reading about Franklin Pierce.

I know firsthand Steve is intelligent, principled and exactly the kind of person we need in the U.S. House of Representatives to help America fulfill the promise of the 21st century.

I’ll be standing with Steve and his team this year. They’re going up against one of the dirtiest players in Minnesota politics and they’re going to need all of our support. This is the good fight we’ve been waiting for in the 2nd District. Let’s not let our moment pass. Let’s prove it’s still possible to send an honorable man to Washington.
