Unintended Consequences

Hal Kimball, over at Blue Man in a Red District, has a great post on 1st Congressional District Republican candidate Brian Davis getting sideswiped by Norm Coleman as the GOP senator’s re-election campaign amps up its attacks against DFLer Al Franken.

By Coleman’s logic, part of his recent attack ad against Franken could also apply to Davis, who has repeatedly been too busy to promptly pay property taxes on his Rochester home.
Franken paid taxes to the wrong states. That’s stupid.

Davis, who says money isn’t the source of his tax troubles, paid his to the right locality, but typically 3.5 months late over the past five years. That’s arrogant.

Republicans: Pot. Meet kettle.

There is a disturbing trend here when those of us who "play by the rules" and comply with Federal Law while others just seem to ignore it.

Has anyone questioned Congresswoman Michele Bachmann why her Personal Financial Disclosure Form, that had a May 15 due date, was filed late?
I have now found her filing that was date stamped as received on June 16th ... there was no mention of including the $200 late penalty.

Considering Davis’ problem was not a one-time occurrence, I believe it is appropriate for Drs. Davis and Lillienberg to release their tax returns for the past five years. Were they paid on time ? Were quarterly payments made on time ? Did they have any off-shore bank accounts (see my commentary in relation to Ms. McCain and Norm Coleman’s silence.) His tax filings could provide great insight into how he views “working” income versus “passive” income and how he might view capital gains tax policy.

There seems to be a sense that these rules are meant for only some of us to follow.
